Empowering Our Teachers: The “Train the Teacher” Cybersecurity Program
Dear Valued Members,
In the current era, where digitalization is reshaping our lives, the importance of cybersecurity is more paramount than ever. As we integrate technology into classrooms, ensuring that our teachers are well-equipped with cybersecurity knowledge is vital to securing our future.
It is with immense pride that I present to you the “Train the Teacher” initiative in Cybersecurity for South African primary and secondary school educators. This initiative stems from our unwavering commitment to fostering a safer and more informed digital landscape for our children and communities. Dinesh Govendor, the current President of the ISC2 South Africa Chapter, commented on the initiative: “We cannot secure our future if our teachers lack the essential knowledge and skills to impart to the children they spend so much time with. As the old adage goes, ‘The blind cannot lead the blind.’ Equip the leaders with knowledge, and the followers will surely learn.”
Why is this Program Important?
- Early Intervention: By training teachers, we are reaching out to hundreds of students through each educator, creating an early awareness of cybersecurity threats and precautions.
- Holistic Education: In this digital age, cybersecurity is not just for the IT department. It’s a life skill that everyone, including our students, should be aware of.
- Securing the Future: With increasing cyber threats, South Africa needs a young generation that is cyber-aware and equipped to tackle challenges. This initiative is an investment in a safer digital future.
- Certification Opportunities: With the support of the Center for Cybersecurity and Safety, a wholly-owned organization by ISC2(USA), we have the resources to help teachers become certified in cybersecurity courses. This not only enhances their professional development but also adds a layer of credibility to their teachings
Our Unique Approach
Engaging: Through the Department of Education, we intend to reach out to all public and private schools and engage all students using real-world examples and interactive modules to make cybersecurity learning exciting and relatable.
Comprehensive: Covering topics from basic online etiquette to sophisticated cyber threats.
Sustainable: Beyond the training, we provide resources for continuous learning and encourage teachers to become ambassadors of cybersecurity in their schools.
Collaboration with the Center for Cybersecurity and Safety
Our mission is amplified through our collaboration with the Center for Cybersecurity and Safety, a wholly-owned organization by ISC2(USA). Leveraging their global expertise and resources, we have been able to design a program that is world-class and adaptable to the unique challenges faced by our South African educators.
I urge all of our members to support and promote this crucial initiative. It’s an investment not only in our teachers but also in the next generation of cyber-aware citizens. As we champion this cause, we reinforce our commitment to securing our nation’s digital landscape.
To those interested in contributing, volunteering, or learning more about the program, please reach out to our dedicated team. Let’s join hands in making this initiative a resounding success, for our teachers, our children, and our nation.
